WSU Extension is offering free soil health testing to a limited number of growers in Eastern Washington. Growers can see how their soils measure up when compared to similar soils in the region. The test will evaluate several aspects of soil organic matter. Organic matter is important because it improves water intake and storage, boosts soil biology, makes your fertilizer work better, and promotes crop yield.
To qualify for up to two free soil health tests per grower, soils must be producing one of the following crops:
- Potatoes
- Onions
To get this free testing, all you have to do is send the following information to Andrew McGuire (click this: andrew.mcguire@wsu.edu), or send a text to 509-237-2115: name, phone number, crop (potatoes or onions, or both) produced on the soil to be tested (not necessarily this year). Also, please send a mailing address if you If you would like us to send you soil bags and an envelope with pre-paid postage to the soil lab.
Growers will be selected for this free testing based on time of request, crop, and location. If selected, you will receive information on how to sample (it’s easy, 0-6″ depth) and where to send the soil samples.

When testing is done, you will receive your data and where it fits in the range of soils in irrigated Eastern Washington. All individual results are confidential.
Growers are limited to two free soil tests through this project.
