When you heard the venue for the National Onion Association’s Summer Convention, did you think to yourself, “Self, why would I want to go to Bakersfield in July?” Your self should have answered, “There will be a lot of cutting-edge technology to see. And there will be air conditioning.” The air conditioning part was not entirely true, as our favorite part of any NOA conference, the field day, always takes place outside.
Outside in this case was anywhere from 105 to 108 degrees, depending on which thermometer you believed. But who’s counting? And besides, as they say about California, “it’s a dry heat.” The field day this year was the San Joaquin Valley Ag Tour. Riders on the (mostly) air-conditioned buses got to see a trick new planter from Plant Tape, Inc., a just-completed, smooth-running packing line from Allround Vegetable Processing and its distributor Rietveld Equipment at Gills Onions and a custom bin washer that shippers can rent from Palogix International.
Onion World will have a full report in the upcoming September-October issue, heading to your mailbox the end of August. In the meantime, here are some outtake photos. Some may be blurry or off-color, but we’re just happy the camera didn’t overheat.
