Onion Market Update for Nov. 28, 2022
The market is generally unchanged and steady. Things were moving at a good pace leading up to the week of Thanksgiving, but the actual week of Thanksgiving was pretty quiet. Shipments were actually heavier than I thought they’d be for as quiet as the phones were.
The week after Thanksgiving is typically somewhat slow and this year is no exception up to this point. We should see things pick up by week’s end, I think. There have been a few price fluctuations here and there on all three colors of onions with some spot-buy opportunities here and there, however the market in general has been quite steady.
Yellows – The market has softened up maybe just slightly from where it was a month ago. I’m a little surprised at this based on supply levels, but when the sheds have to keep their labor busy a certain number of hours each week, and when the demand isn’t there to pull through what is on the floor, sometimes we see the prices dip a bit. I think this is a case in point. It would not be surprising at all to see the market jump up a bit going into Christmas and coming out of the new year.
Whites – Again, this market has been pretty stable. Prices fluctuate from shed to shed right now. Quality this year on whites has a been a little hit and miss it seems, and that could be part of the price difference from shed to shed. Overall this market has probably been the most steady for the past several months.
Reds – Reds seem to be in a good place right now. Mediums are still from time-to-time a thorn, but for the most part, jumbos and mediums alike are moving at a perfect rate right now. Prices have seemed to mostly completely stabilized and we should see this continue into the first of the year, where I’m still predicting that the price has a chance to jump up.
