There are moments in adulthood when you realize your parents (and especially your grandparents) were operating on an entirely different level. When I was in my early 20s and just beginning my career, life revolved around long workdays, takeout, and whatever happened to be left in my refrigerator. Creating budget-friendly meals was in my vocabulary, but I rarely executed it well. One week, my mom came to visit. Embarrassed, I warned her there wasn’t much to eat.
