This year the company is showcasing two new items that are advancing rapidly after extensive strip trials across the northern onion growing regions. These cooperative strip trials with growers are critical to ensuring a quality seed product and understanding the preferences and challenges of onion growers.
Advancing Varieties
OLYX12-990
12-990 was tested in strip trials in the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest and the Northeast. Growers liked its early maturity, coming in at about 105 – 107 days. It will be a “shed opener” onion. Producers were also impressed with its long-term storage and its single centeredness. 12-990 puts out vigorous tops, and has a dependable scale, making it adaptable to various climates and versatile for a grower’s needs.
OLYH12-721
12-721 proved itself to be highly adaptable in trials across the northern U.S. and especially in the Pacific Northwest. This is going to be a great option for processing with a high level of single centers. It has vigorous tops and it’s in the 115 to 118 maturity timeslot. 12-721 has a strong root system that can handle various soil types. It likes a drip system irrigation a little more than overhead.
