Separating Fact from Fiction
Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for both physical and mental wellbeing, yet many people struggle to switch off after a busy day. While maintaining a healthy sleep routine is the most effective way to improve sleep quality, your diet can also play an important role. Surprisingly, one everyday ingredient that may contribute to better overall wellbeing is the onion.
Onions are well known for adding flavor to countless dishes, but they also contain nutrients that can support a healthy digestive system and overall health, both of which can influence the quality of your sleep.
One of the key benefits of onions is that they contain prebiotics. Unlike probiotics, which are live beneficial bacteria, prebiotics act as food for the healthy bacteria already living in your gut. A healthy gut microbiome has been linked to many aspects of wellbeing, including digestion, immune function and even mood. Although research into the gut-brain connection is ongoing, maintaining good gut health may have a positive impact on relaxation and sleep quality.
Onions also contain small amounts of L-tryptophan, an amino acid that the body uses to produce serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin helps regulate mood, while melatonin plays an important role in controlling the body’s natural sleep cycle. While onions alone are unlikely to dramatically improve sleep, including them as part of a healthy, balanced diet may contribute to overall wellbeing.
There are also a number of traditional home remedies involving onions that have been passed down through generations. One of the more unusual is the so-called “onion jar” method, where sliced onions are placed in a jar and their aroma is inhaled before bed. Others prefer onion tea, made by steeping onion slices or onion skins in hot water, often with a little honey added to soften the flavour.
Although many people claim these remedies help them relax, there is currently very little scientific evidence to support their effectiveness. However, enjoying a warm, caffeine-free drink before bed can itself be a calming bedtime ritual, regardless of the ingredients used.
