Benny DeTroy “Buck” Shuman Jr., a pioneer of the Vidalia onion industry and member of the Vidalia Onion Hall of Fame, passed away on May 31 at the age of 91.
Early in his career, Shuman was the proprietor of Shuman Fertilizer and then established Shuman Farms in the early 1980s. Following his retirement as a grower, Shuman began working as a seed representative for D. Palmer Seed in the mid-1990s. In this role, he collaborated with breeders globally, developing cultivars and varieties for the Vidalia onion industry. Some of his notable contributions include the varieties Miss Megan and Sapelo, which were considered cornerstones of the industry.
