Onion Market Update 08/05/2025

By John Harris

Welcome to August! It’s been a minute since my last update. Summer always seems to fly by in a blur — one moment it’s kicking off, and the next we’re staring down school start dates and the end of vacation season.

New Mexico is heading into the final stretch of its season and should be mostly wrapped up in the next couple of weeks. As they wind down, Washington and Idaho/Eastern Oregon are ramping up with all three colors shipping daily — and availability will only increase as New Mexico goes offline. California has had a strong summer and will continue to have good supplies in the months ahead, and New York has begun harvesting locally with red and yellow onions now available. Mexico is still crossing some product, though volumes have finally tapered off.

The good news: most growing regions reported strong seasons, and yields are expected to be at or above average. Quality should be very solid — something we can all look forward to. The not-so-good news: from a marketing standpoint, we’re likely to continue grinding through a below-average market with ongoing challenges through the end of 2025. Beyond that, I won’t attempt to make predictions — but we can all hope something shifts to bring this market out of the doldrums. A little help from the supply-and-demand equation would be welcomed by all.

As always, I appreciate any thoughts, insight, or discussion you’d like to have. Enjoy these last few weeks of summer before school routines kick back in — they’ll be gone before we know it.
