Onion Production Down 5% From 2016

According to the latest estimate from the USDA, 2017 onion production is forecast to be down five percent from 2016.

Onion yield is forecast at 525 cwt per acre, down 17 cwt per acre from last year. Onion area harvested is forecast at 130,000 acres, down 2 percent from 2016.

Idaho took the biggest hit in yield per acre, dropping 130 cwt, while California had the biggest drop in onion area harvested at 2400 acres.
