The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) has announced that Texas onion growers would get another chance to reinstate their marketing order. The marketing order was halted after growers in the region did not renew it, despite an extension.

But many growers protested, saying they were unaware of the vote. It was conducted by mail amid the pandemic and after major storms devastated the region. AMS has yet to set dates for a new vote.

According to the order, the referendum on continuance, which occurs every six years, must have at least a two-thirds majority to pass. The marketing order authorizes the South Texas Onion Committee to conduct research and promotion initiatives, and establish minimum quality requirements under USDA’s oversight. The quality requirements also govern imports into the area.
