Expect a Sizable Price Gap Between Yellow Mediums and Jumbos All Season
By John Harris
We are past Labor Day, but we don’t seem to be past high prices and overall high demand.
Yellows – Prices are generally steady considering unprecedented prices across the country. Colorado is coming into some volume now and Idaho-Eastern Oregon (IEO) is really getting into full production as well. Nevada has also come on line this week and Canada, New York, Michigan and Wisconsin are all cruising as well. With most of these regions all having medium yellows available to them, the emphasis is going to stay on the Northwest to provide bigger sizes to the rest of the country. Due to that, a sizable price gap between mediums and jumbos is probably going to exist all season.
Reds – Prices are very steady. There is enough volume available to cover all demand for full load volume. This market should really stabilize in the next couple of weeks and land on a price that we should be able to count on being steady for the coming months.
Whites – Nevada has started! It’s big news considering they are considered the “White Onion Capital of the Country.” WA and IEO are also getting into a bit more volume and overall quality is starting to become more consistent. CO has a few whites coming as well, but not enough volume to get excited about. There were some early-season quality issues on whites out of the Northwest, but it seems in the last week, that is behind us. Prices on whites are still high and demand persists daily to keep it that way.
It’s a short week and it feels like it. I’ll be in Washington next week meeting with growers and the packing sheds. I’m excited for the trip and to meet with all the shipping friends I’ve made in the industry over all my years in this business. I’ll have pictures for next weeks update.
