Onion Market Update for Nov. 11, 2024
By John Harris
November is here and the Thanksgiving push seems to be in full swing this week. A lot of shipments will go out this week to get onions on the shelves in preparation for Thanksgiving shoppers across the country. Last year, I don’t recall a super-strong Thanksgiving push. My memory recalls that the market was slow and weak. We know it didn’t stay that way, but it felt different pre-Thanksgiving last year versus this year.
Starting last week, we have seen a very nice push and increase in FOB prices on white onions. If you aren’t planning 4-5 days ahead right now on white orders, expect to be disappointed. You aren’t going to call anyone this week and get a load of whites out the next day. They are very tight right now on both medium and jumbos and this isn’t going to change until after Thanksgiving.
The yellow market, for as poor as it has been to start the season, even seems to be at least firming up enough that that price point also looks to be on the rise. Nothing extreme, but at least enough to get out of the cellar.
Reds have remained extremely steady and I think it would be fair to say that the growers would be very happy if we maintained this red market all season. I am expecting at some point down the road that the red market will actually tick upward. Time will tell if that happens.
I am making a trip to Washington this week to do some grower visits, and I’ll have an opportunity to pick some brains and get a good feel for a general consensus on where people think the next three months will lead us. I hope to provide feedback upon my return of what I learned and pass that information along. Have a great week and as always, I appreciate your feedback.
