Onion Market Update 11/26/2024

Happy Thanksgiving week.  The older I get, the more I am amazed at how time flies. The weeks are sometimes long, but the months are always short. Thanksgiving business this year was real and we really had a great couple weeks of heavy business coming into this week.

The white market reacted well between Mexican exports and domestic demand. We have seen the market move up $6 – $8.00 on whites over the last month which has been great. Things have steadied out at the moment, but I won’t be surprised if they get another little bump up after Thanksgiving leading up to Christmas time.

The red and yellow market have largely stayed very steady price-wise. I think we were all hoping to see the jumbo yellow market push up a little with the holiday business, but it really just didn’t happen. We have one more shot of getting a little help over the next several weeks depending on how Christmas business is, but I don’t see anything dramatic taking place.

One other market note is that freight prices have gone up pretty dramatically over the last two weeks.  One thing to consider when this happens is that delivered prices are going up, so the market is moving up, it just isn’t translating to the grower. With that said, as freight comes down a bit over the next week, that is when we could see some small FOB increases. Delivered prices stay the same, but the grower gets the benefit. We’ll see if that happens.

Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving holiday with your friends and family.  I hope to see many of you in Savannah, Georgia in a couple weeks at the annual winter NOA conference.
