Onion Market Update 4/29/2025

By John Harris

It’s been a few weeks, and it’s time for another market update. As we enter May, we have several shipping areas with onions going right now. Southern California is just about to be in full swing. Georgia is also in full swing with both Vidalias and conventional round onions. Texas will be shipping USA and Mexican onions for the next several weeks. Storage crop is still going, but will wind down and be nearly complete in the next several weeks.

Quality in all areas has really been strong for new crop onions so far. There are always a few hiccups this time of year, but overall, it’s been smooth. As Mexican crossings have slowed significantly, so have our daily onion shipments. And with those daily shipments coming down, we have seen an increase in market prices across all colors. The yellow market is still too low and under the cost of production, but it is definitely better than it was two months ago. The red and white markets have improved as well. The price increases have been modest and slow-moving, allowing buyers to adjust prices upward without much price shock as the market has increased.

The Texas crop is short this year due to having the crop being destroyed by an untimely visit from Mother Nature a month ago. California and Georgia will begin to take on most of the volume sourcing in the country until New Mexico gets started in late May and Central California several weeks after that.

I also wanted to congratulate Eagle Eye on their acquisition of Baker & Murakami Produce. That is pretty big news in our industry, and I wish them all the best on their expansion. Have a great week, and I’ll send another update in a few weeks.
