A lot has changed since our last report two weeks ago. The East Coast, Idaho and Malheur County, Ore. and New York are all out of onions. In the Columbia Basin, Wash. and Umatilla Basin, Ore., only jumbo and medium yellows remain, and they dropped $4.25 on average since April 15.
The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas is still shipping many varieties, but whites are down $23 and medium yellows dropped $8.5 in the last two weeks. Only Mexican yellows and sweets are still shipping from South Texas and the yellows are down sharply, by an average of $4.62.
The first 2024 report from Imperial Valley, Calif. is in. Current demand exceeds supply and their yellows are up over last year $1.92 on average.
Vidalia onions started shipping April 17, at $27, three dollars more than last year, but have dropped a dollar since. Organics from the Peach State have yet to ship, but typically come in about $10 more than their conventional counterparts.
